“To tell, or not to tell?” That is a question we often face at OJ. A great MTB trail, a local surf break, a tucked away powder run. We find ourselves walking a fine line between providing information to our readers and protecting favorite places of contributors and friends. Of course, we try to do both. Luckily for us and our readers our Race & Events Editor, Pauline Kitamura, was able to pry some local knowledge out of a hardcore group of mountain bikers down south and uncover the diverse riding scene down in Kyushu.

I face a similar dilemma doing a story on the Earth Celebration. I’ve been attended nearly every year for the past decade and watched it grow. I wouldn’t be disappointed if it stayed just the way it is, but the word is out and as I believe EC truly embodies the spirit of OJ, it’s an honor to be able to look back 20 years to the first time Kodo hosted the event on Sado Island back in 1988.

This, our annual Summer Music Special, is one of my favorite issues. It’s when Craig (Yamashita), our Art Director grabs the wheel and takes us for a ride through Japan’s summer music landscape. His illustration talent is on full display, and if you like your outdoors served up with a healthy dose of music, I’m sure you’ll like it. There’s something going on nearly every weekend all summer, so check out the music calendar to get out there and get in the groove.

to Blair Falahey (OJ Mar/Apr 2007) who successfully summited Lhotse in Nepal on May 21, 2007. He’s now in Pakistan to bag two more 8,000 meter peaks back to back (Gasherbrum I & II). Way to go! We wish Blair and his team well on the expedition.

Hit the beach this summer and enjoy some sand, surf and refreshments at the OJ Beach House on Onjuku Beach in Chiba. Outdoor Japan will be co-sponsoring the “Umi no Ie” with Yelllow Tail wine and our friends at Dining Bar & Pub Zero. Surf lessons available with Japan Longboarding Champion Eugene Teal. Open until August 31. Tel: (0470) 68-8880 (Japanese only). See OJ Online for details.
